My Top 10 Christmas movies

As Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I love movies I wanted to make a list of my favorite holiday movies. You got any special favorites of your own?

Joulu kun sattuu olemaan omaa suosikkiaikaani ja koska rakastan elokuvia päätin tehdä listan omista joulun suosikkielokuvistani. Onko teillä omia suosikkeja?

1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

This is the ultimate Christmas movie (by Frank Capra) that tops every list as THE Christmas movie of all time, is one that I watch every year and am working hard to make it a tradition in my family. It usually airs on Christmas Day also. The story is about a man named George Bailey (James Stewart) who is in trouble and on the verge of suicide and is then shown by a guardian angel what life for his loved ones would be if he never existed.  He realizes his life is very valuable and experiences a Christmas miracle. Makes me cry every time.

Myös Suomen televisiossa siitä saa nauttia joulupäivänä ja yritän myös tehdä siitä perinteen omassa perheessäni. Tarina kertoo George Baileystä (James Stewart) joka on pulassa ja itsemurhan partaalla, kun hänelle ilmestyy suojelusenkeli näyttämään miltä hänen rakkaidensa elämä näyttäisi jos häntä ei koskaan olisi ollut. George ymmärtää elämänsä arvon ja kokee todellisen joulun ihmeen jouluaattona. Saa minut kyyneliin joka ikinen kerta. Ihmeellinen On Elämä Yle Teemalla 25.12.2014 klo 15.55.

2. The Holiday (2006)

My favorite modern day Christmas film and one of my favorite films of all time. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) are two women on two different continents with guy trouble. In an attempt to get over this they swap homes over the holidays and by chance both happen to meet new guys Graham (Jude Law) and Miles (Jack Black) and fall in love. I must give recognition to Hans Zimmer also for the incredible music that just moves me every time I watch the movie. And this is a movie I watch at least once every Christmas. Warmly recommend.

Nykyajan suosikki jouluelokuvani ja yksi kaikkien aikojen lempielokuviani on Holiday. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) ja Iris (Kate Winslet) ovat kaksi naista kahdella eri mantereella ja molemmilla on mieshuolia. Paetakseen näitä he vaihtavat koteja joulun ajaksi ja sattumalta molemmille ilmestyy uusi mies kuvioihin, Graham (Jude Law) ja Miles (Jack Black) ja molemmat naiset rakastuvat. Pisteitä annan myös upealle Hans Zimmerille elokuvan musiikista joka liikuttaa minua joka kerta kun katson elokuvaa. Tämä elokuva minun on katsottava ainakin kerran joulunaikaan. Voin suositella erittäin lämpimästi. 

3. Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York (1992)

All kids remember the classic Home Alone movies, where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) wishes for his family to disappear and ends up spending Christmas home alone defending it from the burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). I actually saw Home Alone 2 before the first one and have grown to love it even more. This is also where my love for New York started. Kevin accidentally ends up on a plane alone to New York instead of Florida with his family. He has his father's valuables and is inventive enough to check in at the Plaza Hotel in NYC without the staff realizing he is alone. He tries to survive in the big apple and find his aunt and uncle but ends up finding their empty house. When running into his two favorite crooks Harry and Marv Kevin sets up traps in the house and the fun begins. One of the most touching moments in the movie is when he is finally reunited with his mother by the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. And once again, no Christmas mood without the music. Home Alone was later followed with sequels but the leading role of Kevin was changed.

Kaikki lapset muistavat Yksin Kotona-elokuvat, jossa Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) toivoo perheensä katoavan ja päätyy viettämään joulua yksin kotona puolustaen sitä murtovarkailta Harryltä (Joe Pesci) ja Marvelta (Daniel Stern). Itse näin Yksin Kotona 2 - Eksynyt New Yorkissa-elokuvan ensin ja siitä on tullut suosikkini. Tästä elokuvasta myös rakkauteni New Yorkiin on alkanut. Kevin joutuu yksin lennolle New Yorkiin kun muu perhe matkaa Floridaan. Isänsä lompakon avulla hän saa kekseliäisyytensä ansiosta huoneen New Yorkin Plaza hotellista henkilökunnan saamatta selville että hän on yksin. Hän yrittää selvitä isossa omenassa ja löytää setänsä ja tätinsä, mutta päätyykin näiden tyhjään taloon. Törmättyään kahteen lempirosvoonsa Harryyn ja Marveen, talo muuttuu ansojen viidakoksi ja hauskuus alkaa. Elokuvan ehkä koskettavin hetki on kun Kevin vihdoin näkee äitinsä Rockefeller Centerin joulukuusen luona. Myös musiikilla on tässä elokuvassa tärkeä rooli (ainakin minulle).

4. The Santa Clause (1994)

Who is Santa Clause really? This Christmas classic is one to watch every holiday season. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is a divorcee who accidentally kills Santa Clause who falls off his roof at Christmas. As the Clause says the next person to put on Santa's jacket is the next Santa Clause. Scott and his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) are transported to North Pole where all the elves greet their new boss and show him the ropes. Scott still doesn't believe he is Santa until he starts gaining weight and growing a beard that is beyond his control. His son earlier in disbelief of Santa now believes more than ever but how to convince the rest of the world about being a man who is said to be only fairy tale? Santa Clause also has two sequels, I've seen both of them but there's just something about the original story. 

Kuka joulupukki oikeastaan on? Muttu Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille on jokajoulun kestosuosikki. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) on eronnut ja vahingossa pelästyttää joulupukin tämän häärätessä hänen katollaan ja pukki tippuu ja kuolee. Laittaessaan pukin kaavun ylleen Scottista tulee automaattisesti uusi pukki. Scott ja hänen poikansa Charlie (Eric Lloyd) päätyvät Pohjoisnavalle, jossa iloinen tonttujoukko tervehtii uutta pomoaan ja kertoo uuden pukin työnkuvasta. Scott ei vieläkään usko olevansa joulupukki kunnes painoa alkaa kertymään ja parta kasvamaan eikä hän mitenkään tätä pysty hallitsemaan. Hänen poikansa joka aiemmin ei uskonut pukkiin onkin nyt eniten uskossa, mutta miten Scott saa uskoteltua muulle maailmalle olevansa hahmo jonka kuuluisi olla satua? Elokuvalla on myös kaksi jatko-osaa, molemmat on tullut katsottua mutta alkuperäinen tarina on silti paras. Mutta Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille ja Mutta Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille 2 Nelosella 22.12. klo 16.30 ja 23.12. klo 16.25.

5. Love Actually (2003)

Love is all around us, and it's Christmas. Love Actually is all about one thing; love at Christmas. Set in London, UK this is a must see romantic Christmas comedy. The story follows eight very different couples and their love lives around Christmas, starring Keira Knightly, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant just to mention a few. 

On joulu ja rakkautta on joka paikassa. Rakkautta Vain kertoo nimensä mukaisesti rakkaudesta, erityisesti joulunaikaan. Tarina sijoittuu Lontooseen ja on yksi rakastetuimmista nykyajan romanttisista komedioista. Mukana on kahdeksan paria ja heidän rakkauselämänsä joulua edeltävänä aikana, pääosissa mm. Keira Knightley, Colin Firth ja Hugh Grant.  

6. The Family Stone (2005)

We all have crazy families don't we? There is just something about combining these families and Christmas into a movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is playing an uptight businesswoman Meredith who is about to meet her boyfriend's not so conservative family for the first time, at Christmas. She has no idea what she's in for and before the holidays are over she feels like a fish out of water who wants to jump into another pool. Diane Keaton plays the wacky mother and in other family member roles starring for example Luke Wilson and Rachel McAdams. Will Meredith loosen up and enjoy Christmas with her new family? 

Kaikillahan on hieman hullu perhe vai mitä? Tämän ja joulun yhdistämisestä saa jostain syystä mitä parhaimpia elokuvia aikaiseksi. Perheen Jalokivi on hauska joulukomedia jossa Sarah Jessica Parkerin esittämä tiukkis businessnainen Meredith tapaa miesystävänsä vähemmän perinteisen perheen ensimmäistä kertaa jouluna. Hän ei tiedä yhtään mihin on joutunut eikä tunne itseään alkuunkaan kotoisaksi ja toivoo pääsevänsä pois ennen kuin joulu on ohi. Perheen hulvattoman hauskaa äitiä esittää Diane Keaton ja perheen muina jäseninä nähdään mm. Luke Wilson ja Rachel McAdams. Pystyykö Meredith rentoutumaan ja nauttimaan joulusta uuden perheensä parissa?

7. Little Women (1994)

The classic story by Louisa M. Alcott back in the 1800s tells a story about four sisters Meg, (Trini Alvarado) Jo, (Winona Ryder) Beth, (Claire Danes) Amy(Kirsten Dunst/Samantha Mathis) and their mother (Susan Sarandon) struggling in the post-Civil War America. Their father is fighting at the war so the girls spend a lot of time without him. Despite all misfortune and the different suitors the girls face nothing is more important as sisterhood. I remember my grandmother got me this particular version of the movie for Christmas years ago and I fell in love with the story. There is laughter, sadness, romance and definitely holiday spirit. Remember to read the book also.

Alcottin 1800-luvun klassinen tarina Pikku Naisia kertoo neljästä siskosta Megistä, (Trini Alvarado) Josta, (Winona Ryder) Bethistä, (Claire Danes) Amystä (Kirsten Dunst/Samantha Mathis) ja heidän äidistään (Susan Sarandon) jotka taistelevat selvitääkseen sisällissodan jälkeisessä Amerikassa. Tyttöjen isä on sotimassa joten tytöt viettävät pääosin aikansa äitinsä kanssa. Vastoinkäymisistä ja lukuisista kosijoista huolimatta mikään ei ole yhtä tärkeää kuin sisarrakkaus. Sain tämän elokuvaversion aikanaan joululahjaksi isoäidiltäni ja ihastuin tarinaan oitis. Se on täynnä iloa, surua, romantiikkaa ja tietenkin joulumieltä. Muistakaa myös kirja. 

8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

A classic Christmas story about an old man called Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) who claims to be Santa Clause. He works at Macy's as the department store santa and is soon institutionalized as a crazy person. The woman who hired him, Doris Walker(Maureen O'Hara) and her daughter Susan (Natalie Wood) soon start to notice that there is something very special about this man. Fred Gailey (John Payne) a lawyer and friend of Doris decides to help Kris at a trial and proving to everyone that he is in fact the one and only Santa Claus. 

Klassinen joulutarina vanhasta miehestä nimeltä Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) joka väittää olevansa Joulupukki. Hän työskentelee Macy's tavaratalossa pukkina ja julistetaan puheidensa vuoksi hulluksi. Hänet palkannut nainen Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) ja tämän tytär Susan (Natalie Wood) huomaavat pian että tässä miehessä on jotakin todella erikoista. Heidän ystävänsä ja juristi Fred Gaileyn (John Payne) avulla he auttavat Krisiä todistamaan kaikille että tämä todella on oikea Joulupukki.

9. The Flight Before Christmas (2008) 

This animated partly Finnish success story tells about a reindeer called Niko who has to overcome his fear of flying so he can save his fleet from a pack of wolves. He hears from his mother that his father is a part of Santa Clause's flying forces and he also dreams about flying there someday. With the help of a flying squirrel Julius Niko desperately tries to find his way to Santa's fell to see his father. The movie sequel Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure was released in 2012

Niko Lentäjän Poika on suomalainen menestystarina joka kertoo pikkuporosta nimeltä Niko, jonka on voitettava lentopelkonsa pelastaakseen porolaumansa uhkaavalta susilaumalta. Kuullessaan äidiltään Oonalta että hänen isänsä kuuluu joulupukin lentäviin poroihin, ja Nikokin haluaa jonakin päivänä kuulua tähän joukkoon. Liito-orava ystävänsä Juliuksen avulla Niko lähtee etsimään joulupukin maata tavatakseen isänsä. Elokuvan jatko-osa Niko 2 - Lentäjäveljekset ilmestyi vuonna 2012.

10. Elf (2003)

This Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell as the elf Buddy became a box office hit. Buddy has been raised as an elf but realizes something isn't right since he is way bigger than the others. He discovers he really is human and is sent to New York to find out about his true origins. It turns out his real father never knew he was born and just happens to be on Santa's naughty list. Meanwhile Buddy is enjoying New York to the fullest.

Will Ferrellin Buddy tonttuna tähdittämä joulukomedia oli hitti jo syntyessään. Tontut ovat kasvattaneet Buddyn, joka pian huomaa olevansa erilainen kuin muut. Hän saa selville että onkin ihminen ja hänet lähetetään New Yorkiin etsimään isäänsä. Käy ilmi että tämä ei koskaan tiennyt Buddyn syntymästä ja on vielä kaiken lisäksi joulupukin tuhmien listalla. Samaan aikaan Buddy nauttii New Yorkin iloista. 

Movies and champagne

It's been forever since I went to the movies so it was time for a traditional Saturday night; movie and drinks. Spending quality time with a friend you haven't seen in a long time is the best. And watching a hilarious movie together is even better. We went for That Awkward Moment with Zac Efron. Now there's a sight for sore eyes. The movie was hilarious. It was a romantic comedy from guys' point of view which made it even more fun. The whole theatre was laughing out loud, during some moments I really couldn't stop laughing and it was just a movie. 

After a great movie it was time for some drinks. I gotta admit there aren't that many nice cocktail bars, but A21 definitely is one. The exclusivity starts at the door as you have to ring the doorbell to get in and usually you need to reserve a table to get a seat. The place is really not that big but I like the atmosphere. The couches are comfy and the service is good. And of course the main thing, the drinks. They are a bit pricier than what you get at regular clubs but the list is endless and you're sure gonna enjoy it. I decided to go for a delicious raspberry champagne cocktail while my friend A tried a blueberry vanilla drink. This is the place where you really sit down and talk and enjoy your drinks with time. 

Viimeisestä leffassa käynnistä on aikaa joten vietin oikein perinteisen lauantai-illan; elokuva Tennarissa ja drinksuille sen jälkeen. Laatuaika ystävän kanssa jota ei ole nähnyt pitkään aikaan on parasta. Hauskan leffan katsominen yhdessä on vielä parempi. Päädyimme katsomaan Sinkkuna Suhteessa elokuvan jossa Zac Efron on pääosassa. Ja onhan häntä ihan mukava katsella. Leffa oli tosi hauska. Se on siis romanttinen komedia miesten näkökulmasta, joten se toi siihen hieman erilaisuutta. Koko teatteri nauroi ääneen ja itselläni oli joissain kohdin vaikea pidätellä naurua vaikka kyseessä oli vain leffa. 

Hyvän leffan jälkeen on hyvä aika lähteä drinkeille. Täytyy myöntää että pääkaupungista ei kovin montaa hyvää cocktail baaria löydy, mutta A21 kuuluu niihin. Eksklusiivisuus alkaa jo ovelta, sillä sisään pääsee ainoastaan ovikelloa soittamalla, hieman erikoista siis. Yleensä kannattaa myös varata pöytä etukäteen varsinkin jos on isommalla porukalla liikenteessä. Tämä lounge ei ole varsin iso mutta pidän siitä kuitenkin. Sohvat ovat mukavia ja palvelu hyvää. Ja tietysti pääasia, drinkit. Hintataso on hieman korkeampi kuin yleisesti mutta lista on loputon ja drinkeistä tosiaan nauttii. Itse päädyin herkulliseen vadelma samppanja cocktailiin ja ystäväni A kokeili mustikka vanilja drinkkiä. Täällä tosiaan saa istua rauhassa ja jutella ja nauttia drinkeistään ajan kanssa. 

This one will definitely be a new favorite of mine. You can see the champagne nicely on top and I really appreciate the fresh ingredients they use such as the raspberries in my drink. I had a fun night and this was the perfect ending for it. Next week is going to be really busy for me with lots to do so this weekend was really needed. Tomorrow it's a new week and back to work. Tästä todellakin tulee uusi suosikkini. Samppanjakerros näkyy kivasti päällä ja tuoreet raaka-aineet ovat myös todella tärkeitä. Ei siis mitään pakastemarjasekoitusta vaan tuoreita vadelmia. Minulla oli hauska ilta ja se päättyi hyvin. Ensi viikko tulee olemaan aika kiireinen ja paljon tehtävää joten tämä viikonloppu tuli todella tarpeen. Huomenna uusi viikko ja takaisiin töihin. Style Icon: Grace Kelly

I thought of combining my two favorite things into one post; style and film. Grace Kelly was and still after her passing is a Style Icon with a capital S. She is one of my favorite if not the very favorite style icon. Her style was classic and sophisticated, very princess like. The movie Grace of Monaco is finally getting out in May this year and the trailer was released today. My favorite Grace Kelly movie moments have been Rear Window and To Catch a Thief, which is set in the French Riviera. Probably the reason why I love that movie. And Cary Grant. Grace also got Hermès to name a today worldwide known purse named after her, Hermès Kelly bag which is probably the most sold after the Birkin. Ajattelin yhdistää kaksi lempiasiaani samaan postaukseen; tyylin ja elokuvat. Grace Kelly oli ja on edelleen Tyyli-ikoni isolla T:llä. Hän on yksi suosikeistani ellei jopa suosikki tyyli-ikonini. Hänen tyylinsä oli klassinen ja hillitty, erittäin prinsessamainen. Elokuva Grace of Monaco tulee teattereihin toukokuussa ja traileri julkaistiin tänään. Lempi Grace Kelly-hetkiäni elokuvien puolesta ovat Takaikkuna ja Varkaitten Paratiisi, joka sijoittuu Ranskan Rivieralle. Ehkä siksi rakastan sitä niin paljon. Ja onhan siinä myös Cary Grant. Hermès on myös nimennyt tänä päivänä ympäri maailmaa tunnetun käsilaukun hänen mukaansa, Hermès Kelly, joka on todennäköisesti Birkin laukun jälkeen heidän myydyin laukkunsa. Tsekatkaa lempi Grace Kelly tyylimuistoni ja uuden elokuvan traileri. Tätä todella kannattaa odottaa ja vaikuttaa jopa siltä että saattaisi jopa Oscareita napsahtaa. Kuka on sinun tyyli-ikonisi?

My Life in Movies

Oscar Nominations

As a movie fanatic, I follow a lot of award shows (also music and other related) not just because of the awards but the clothes too. In my last post I was writing about my Golden Globe red carpet favorites, but the gala I love the most is the Oscars, the Academy Awards! Because of the time difference the show always starts in my country around midnight, but most times I've managed to stay up until 7am and watch the whole show. This brings me to today's post. The Oscar nominees were announced this week. Before the best picture award used to have 5 nominees as the other categories, but a few years ago they started nominating 10 movies (9 this year).  American Hustle and Gravity both lead the nomination contest with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role and Directing. 12 Years a Slave is a runner-up with 9 nominations. There are some big names like Julia Roberts and the nomination record holder Meryl Streep (18 nominations, 3 awards). Jennifer Lawrence being the Best Actress winner last year might have it tough winning (supporting role) two years running.  Her dress last year was one of the most memorable ones, white Dior. From the male side names worth mentioning are Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, who in my opinion would finally deserve his Oscar. Maybe this is the year. I've followed his career all the way from starring with Johnny Depp in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and his role in This Boy's Life, to his breakthrough role in Titanic.

One of my (not so directly) Oscar moments is when I spent a summer in Los Angeles and we went to the movies every now and then to the Chinese Theatre next to Kodak Theatre. And when I was watching the Oscars the following February one of the movies one the Best Picture award. Do you have a favorite Oscar moment? I also remember visiting the Kodak theatre and seeing all the Best Picture movies lined up on the wall, one for each year. Then there are of course the best and worst dressed people that you remember and naturally the movies that have touched our hearts from decade to decade. Who can forget classics like The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind or Casablanca? There's just something about them. Here are some of the most important award nominees this year. Elokuvahulluna seuraan paljon palkintogaaloja. En ainoastaan elokuviin liittyen vaan myös musiikkiin ja muuhun. Vaikka kyse on tekojen palkitsemisesta on myös vaatteilla iso rooli. Viime postauksessa kirjoitin Golden Globe-gaalan pukusuosikeista, mutta gaala joka on minulle kaikkein rakkain on Oscar-gaala! Aikaeron takia show alkaa Suomessa vasta puolenyön aikoihin, mutta useimmiten olen jopa pysynyt hereillä aamu seitsemään asti koko shown läpi. Tästä pääsemmekin tämän päivän postaukseen. Oscar ehdokkaat julkistettiin tällä viikolla. Ennen parhaan elokuvan palkintoja tavoitteli 5 elokuvaa, kunnes muutama vuosi sitten siirryttiin 10 (tänä vuonna 9). American Hustle ja Gravity johtavat taistoa 10 ehdokkuuden voimin, napaten ehdokkuuksia kategorioissa kuten paras elokuva, paras naispääosa ja paras ohjaus, 12 Years a Slave kintereillään kaapaten 9 ehdokkuutta. Ehdolla on isoja nimiä kuten Julia Roberts ja Oscar ehdokkuuksien ennätyksenpitäjä Meryl Streep (18 ehdokkuutta, 3 palkintoa). Viime vuoden naispääosan voittanut Jennifer Lawrence haastaa nyt kanssanäyttelijöitään sivuosa Oscar kategoriassa, mutta viime vuoden voitto voi tehdä palkinnon saamisesta vaikeaa. Hänen viime vuotinen pukunsa on kyllä yksi ikimuistoisimmista, valkoinen Dior. Miesten puolelta mainittakoon Christian Bale ja LeonardoDicaprio, joka vihdoin ja viimein ansaitsisi Oscarin. Ehkä nyt on se vuosi! Olen seurannut hänen uraansa aina Johnny Deppin rinnalta Gilbert Grape-elokuvassa ja Tämän Pojan Elämä-elokuvassa läpimurtoon Titanicissa. 

Yksi (ei niin suoraan) Oscar hetkistäni oli kun vietin kesän Los Angelesissa. Kävimme jonkun verran elokuvissa Hollywoodissa, Chinese Theatre-teatterissa Kodak teatterin vieressä. Kun seuraavana vuonna seurasin Oscar-gaalaa kotona palkittiin yksi näistä elokuvista parhaan elokuvan Oscarilla. Onko teillä lempi Oscar-hetkeä? Muistan myös käyneeni Kodak teatterissa, jossa kaikki parhaan elokuvan Oscar elokuvat on järjestetty kylteissä seinälle vuosijärjestyksessä. Tietenkin mieleen tulee myös parhaiten ja huonoiten pukeutuneet, mutta tärkeintä ovat kuitenkin elokuvat jotka ovat koskettaneet vuosikymmenestä vuosikymmeneen. Kuka voisi unohtaa klassikoita kuten Ihmemaa Oz, Tuulen Viemää tai Casablanca? Niissä on sitä jotain. Tässä muutama tärkein ehdokkuus, katso koko lista täältä.

Falling for Sparks

I can't remember the last time I read a book that wasn't school literature. It was probably almost a year ago in Nice and I was so captured by those books that I started and ended a lot of my days with those. Now I've grown interest in Nicholas Sparks books. A staggering 8 of his books have been transformed into movies. The Notebook is absolutely a legend, and a recent favorite of mine Safe Haven. That's the newest movie. I bought some of the books for Christmas and as soon as the school stress gets easier I'll get on with these. One book I wanted wasn't there so I'm still waiting for that. And there are two books adapted to movies coming out soon. Any experiences about Sparks? Have a nice weekend!

En muista koska viimeksi olen lukenut muuta kuin koulukirjallisuutta. Taisi olla lähes vuosi sitten Nizzassa, ja ne kirjat todella veivät mennessään että usein aloitin ja lopetin päivän niitä lukemalla. Nyt olen ihastunut Nicholas Sparksin kirjoihin. Huikeat 8 hänen kirjoistaan on muutettu elokuviksi. The Notebook on ehdottomasti legenda, ja uusin suosikkini Safe Haven. Se on uusin elokuva. Ostin joitakin kirjoista jouluksi, ja heti kun koulu stressi hieman helpottaa aloitan tämän urakan. Yhtä kirjaa vielä odottelen kun sitä ei Akateemisen hyllystä löytynyt. Parista kirjasta on myös tulossa lähiaikoina elokuva. Onko teillä mitään lukukokemuksia Sparksista? Hyvää viikonloppua! 

A new year has started

Well, it's a new year. How has yours started? I've been taking it easy but been quite busy with working and more school deadlines and such. Today I also read some news that winter might be called off cause the weather hasn't been like that at all. Can you imagine? Canceling winter in Finland. In the northern parts, Lapland that is there's plenty of snow and minus degrees though, but here in the south it's like a long fall. I don't mind the "warmth" but some snow would be nice though. Then again what snow usually causes is huge parking problems in the cities and when it melts it gets all brown and wet, that's gross and not good for the shoes either. Hehe. Lapland isn't that far away, only an hour by plane so it's easy to get some winter for a while if you wanna get some. And apparently it's a big hit now since a lot of British and French tourists are visiting up there. Even some royals.

Yesterday my brothers and I were watching some old home movies from 15 years back. Gosh how the time really has flown by. Some was from our trips around that we used to do, especially at summer time. I remember back then I had an obsession with a teen show called Sweet Valley High. Anyone else? I was obsessed with reading the books too, I think I have all of them. Watching my mum's home videos made me realize how movies and television has been a big passion of mine since a kid, even more than music. I was remembering the lines back then already and it hasn't changed until this day. I still remember so many lines and scenes from movies especially and watching them with my family in particular gets them annoyed since I usually spit out the lines before the actors say them. So I dunno, maybe I am in the wrong field and should switch to the film industry, it has always intrigued me. What do you guys think? You have something you're really passionate about? Btw, the phase also included me copying the twins hair and the style of clothes they wore. Those were the days. And it's fun remembering them. 

Uusi vuosi on täällä. Miten teidän on alkanut? Itse olen ottanut iisisti, tehnyt töitä, hionut koulutehtäviä ja sen sellaista. Tänään luin myös uutisista että talvi saatetaan peruutta. Voitteko kuvitella? Talven peruutus Suomessa. Lapissa tosin on reilusti lunta ja pakkasta, mutta etelässä on aivan kuin venähtänyt syksy. Minua ei kyllä "lämpö" haittaa, mutta olisi kiva jos olisi vähän lunta. Toisaalta lumi aiheuttaa niin paljon harmia varsinkin isoissa kaupungeissa. Parkkipaikkoja uupuu, ja kun lumi sulaa niin se on likaista ja ruskeaa loskaa. Ei mukavaa kengillekään. Hehe. Lappihan on vain noin tunnin lentomatkan päässä, joten talvea kaipaaville on myös mahdollista lähteä siellä käymään. Ja näköjään siitä on tulossa trendikästä kun siellä ravaa paljon ranskalaisia ja englantilaisia turisteja. Jopa kuninkaallisia.

Eilen katsoimme veljieni kanssa kotivideoita 15 vuoden takaa. Miten aika onkaan lentänyt. Osa materiaalista oli reissuiltamme joita teimme varsinkin kesäaikaan. Muistan että niinä aikoina minulla oli pakkomielle Sweet Valley High teinisarjaan. Muistaako kukaan? Olin hulluna niihin kirjoihin myös ja minulla taitaa olla ne kaikki. Kun katselin näitä vanhoja kotivideoita tajusin miten elokuvat ja tv on ollut intohimoni jo nuoresta lähtien, jopa enemmän kuin musiikki. Muistin repliikkejä ulkoa jo silloin, eikä se todellakaan ole muuttunut. Muistan edelleen liian monta repliikkiä ja kohtausta elokuvista ja jos katson jotain varsinkin perheeni kanssa saattaa se ärsyttää heitä. Sanat tulevat suustani yleensä ennen näyttelijöitä. Joten en tiedä, ehkä olen väärällä alalla ja pitäisi siirtyä elokuva-alalle, se on aina kiehtonut minua. Mitä mieltä olette? Onko teillä jotain mikä on intohimonne? Muuten, SVH vaihe sisälsi myös kaksosten hius-ja vaatetyylin matkimista. Ne olivat aikoja. Ja niitä on hauska muistella. 

Boxing Day in Helsinki

After spending Christmas with my family I also wanted to show my friend around Helsinki. So what do you do on a day when all shops are closed? Walk around as tourists do. We stopped by at some churches, just walking and no stress. The market square was empty, as it was only Boxing Day. I wanted to show something very traditional so we walked around until Café Strindberg opened and had some lunch and coffee there. I always like the atmosphere there, the seats are comfy and you almost feel like you're in a Parisian café. We then took the ferry to Suomenlinna fortress island and before we got back it was dark. It was getting a bit chilly so it was better to catch the tram back to my place and on the way we stopped by to get tickets to our movie for the night, The Hunger Games - Catching Fire. We had a bit time to relax and get ready before heading out to dinner and the movie, and after we were both so tired that we didn't go out for drinks as we had planned. The next day was already time to say goodbye. The time went by so fast and I really hope to see each other again soon! :)

Vietettyämme joulun perheeni kanssa oli aika näyttää Helsinkiä ystävälleni. Mitä sitä voi tehdä kun kaikki kaupat ovat kiinni? Kävellä kaupungilla turistien tapaan. Pysähdyimme matkalla kirkoilla, ja kävelimme ympäriinsä ilman huolen häivää. Kauppatori oli tyhjillään, olihan vasta Tapaninpäivä. Halusin näyttää jotain perinteistä joten odotimme kunnes Cafè Strindberg avas ovensa ja nautimme siellä lounasta ja kahvia. Pidän kahvilan tunnelmasta, istuimet ovat mukavat ja se on aivan kuin olisi pariisilaisessa kahvilassa. Lounaan jälkeen hyppäsimme Suomenlinnan lautalle ja ennen kuin ehdimme takaisin oli jo pimeää. Ilma alkoi viilenemään joten hyppäsimme raitiovaunuun ja matkalla kotiin kävimme ostamassa liput illan leffaan, Nälkäpeli - Vihan Liekit. Meillä oli hieman aikaa rentoutua ennen kuin laittauduimme ja lähdimme ulos syömään ja leffaan. Olimme leffan jälkeen molemmat niin väsyneitä että emme enää jatkaneet iltaa drinkkien merkeissä kuten alunperin suunnittelimme. Seuraavana päivänä oli jo jäähyväisten aika. Aika kului niin nopeasti ja todella toivon että näemme taas pian! :)

At Café Strindberg there were people lining up to get in before the official opening time. I could feel the warmth filling me once we stepped in. The waiters instantly circled around offering people some glasses of water to drink before ordering. Once we had made our order something weird happened. I was still checking the menu and all of a sudden my glass fell down first spilling the water on my jacket on the couch and then falling down on the floor and breaking to pieces. I swear I didn't even touch it. The waiter and I had a laugh since he was sure it was the elves who did it. Well, maybe those pieces will bring me good luck for this year.

Café Strindbergillä oli jo jonoksi ihmisiä ennen varsiaista avaamisaikaa. Tunsin kuinka lämpö täytti minut kun astuimme sisään, ulkona seisoskelu kuitenkin verottaa. Tarjoilijat jakoivat välittömästi asiakkaille vesilaseja ennen kuin kukaan ehti tilata. Kun olimme antaneet tilauksemme jotain outoa tapahtui. Tarkastelin vielä ruokalistaa kun yhtäkkiä vesilasini tippui ensin kastellen sohvalla olleen takkini ja tippui sitten maahan pirstoutuen miljoonaksi palaksi. En edes hipaissut koko lasia. Naureskelimme asiaa tarjoilijan kanssa ja hän oli vakuuttunut että tontut olivat asialla. No, ehkäpä ne sirpaleet tuovat onnea tulevalle vuodelle. 

The Suspects Wore Louboutins

I recently read an article about Christian Louboutin shoes in a women's magazine and somehow I ended up watching the movie Bling Ring and all that made me write this post. Louboutins or "Loubies" for short are probably the most well-known and desired shoes in the world. The red soles are undeniably recognizable. No wonder Louboutins were chosen as the sexiest shoes in the world last year. Everyone wants a pair. It's a status symbol you could say.

So what do people do to get these shoes? That's what the movie Bling Ring (directed by Sofia Coppola) is about. A group of Valley teenagers in LA are so obsessed with celebrities and their possessions that they start robbing their favorite celebs. Their favorite target is Paris Hilton, at whose house they go "shopping" as they call it several times even. They grab a bag or a suitcase in the closet and start filling it with jewels, clothes, shoes, you name it. And usually they find a stack of money too. Especially at Paris Hilton's closet they saw tons and tons of Louboutin shoes. So why not steal a few pairs, she won't notice right? Then things got out of hand and they started robbing other celebs such as Audrina Patridge, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, and the Bling Ring-leader's favorite celeb, Lindsay Lohan. They got caught on some surveillance tapes and together with those and some tips the police got a lead. Anyone of you seen the movie? It's based on real events. 

These kids didn't think they were doing anything wrong until they got caught and sentenced with stealing stuff altogether worth about $3 million. They always checked the address in advance and made sure the celebrity is out of town by checking news online. What makes it scary is that they just walked into these houses without anyone noticing. The fancy lifestyle and nice things was so important to them they were ready to steal the things. The movie is made based on an article from Vanity Fair called The Suspects Wore Louboutins. If you wanna read it there's a link, it's rather fascinating.  I just finished reading it myself. What's your opinion on the issue?

Luin hiljattain artikkelin Christian Louboutin kengistä eräästä naistenlehdestä, ja jotenkin päädyin katsomaan elokuvan Bling Ring ja kirjoittamaan tämän postauksen. Louboutinit tai "Loubiet" ovat varmaankin maailman tunnetuimmat ja halutuimmat kengät. Punaiset pohjat tunnistaa kieltämättä missä vain. Ei ihme että Louboutinit valittiin viime vuoden seksikkäimmiksi kengiksi. Kaikki haluavat sellaiset. Voisi sanoa että kengät ovat statussymboli. 

Mitä ihmiset sitten tekevät saadakseen tällaiset kengät? Siitä elokuva Bling Ring (ohjaaja Sofia Coppola) kertoo. Ryhmälle Valley teinejä Los Angelesista julkkikset ja heidän omaisuutensa ovat niin syvä pakkomielle, että he alkavat varastaa tavaraa lempijulkkiksiltaan. Heidän suosikkikohteensa on Paris Hilton, jonka kotona he käyvät "shoppailemassa" kuten he asiasta puhuvat, useita kertoja. He etsivät vaatekaapissa ollessaan laukun tai matkalaukun ja alkavat täyttää sitä koruilla, vaatteilla, kengillä, millä vaan. Ja usein löytyy myös tukku rahaa jostain. Varsinkin Paris Hiltonin vaatekaappi on täynnä Louboutin kenkiä, joten eihän hän varmaan huomaa jos nappaa mukaansa muutaman parin eihän? Sitten asiat riistäytyvät käsistä ja he alkavat ryöstää muita julkimoita kuten Audrina Patridge, Orlando Bloom ja Miranda Kerr, sekä Bling Ring-ryhmän "pomon" suosikki Lindsay Lohan. He jäävät kiinni turvakameralle ja yhdessä poliisin saamien vinkkien kanssa heidän kannoilleen päästään. Onko kukaan teistä nähnyt kyseistä elokuvaa? Se perustuu tositapahtumiin.

Nämä nuoret eivät uskoneet tehneensä mitään väärää ennen kuin jäivät kiinni ja heidät tuomittiin varastettuaan tavaraa yhteensä noin 3 miljoonan dollarin edestä. Ennen keikkaa he aina tarkistivat julkkiksen osoitteen netistä ja seurasivat viihdeuutisia selvittääkseen koska he ovat poissa kaupungista. Pelottavaa tästä tekee sen että he vain kävelivät sisään näihin taloihin ilman että kukaan huomasi. Elokuva perustuu Vanity Fair-artikkeliin The Suspects Wore Louboutins.
