As Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I love movies I wanted to make a list of my favorite holiday movies. You got any special favorites of your own?
Joulu kun sattuu olemaan omaa suosikkiaikaani ja koska rakastan elokuvia päätin tehdä listan omista joulun suosikkielokuvistani. Onko teillä omia suosikkeja?
1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
This is the ultimate Christmas movie (by Frank Capra) that tops every list as THE Christmas movie of all time, is one that I watch every year and am working hard to make it a tradition in my family. It usually airs on Christmas Day also. The story is about a man named George Bailey (James Stewart) who is in trouble and on the verge of suicide and is then shown by a guardian angel what life for his loved ones would be if he never existed. He realizes his life is very valuable and experiences a Christmas miracle. Makes me cry every time.
Frank Capran klassikko Ihmeellinen on Elämä on ehkä maailman katsotuin ja rakastetuin jouluelokuva ja ehdottomasti minulle joulun ykköselokuva. Myös Suomen televisiossa siitä saa nauttia joulupäivänä ja yritän myös tehdä siitä perinteen omassa perheessäni. Tarina kertoo George Baileystä (James Stewart) joka on pulassa ja itsemurhan partaalla, kun hänelle ilmestyy suojelusenkeli näyttämään miltä hänen rakkaidensa elämä näyttäisi jos häntä ei koskaan olisi ollut. George ymmärtää elämänsä arvon ja kokee todellisen joulun ihmeen jouluaattona. Saa minut kyyneliin joka ikinen kerta. Ihmeellinen On Elämä Yle Teemalla 25.12.2014 klo 15.55.
2. The Holiday (2006)
My favorite modern day Christmas film and one of my favorite films of all time. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) are two women on two different continents with guy trouble. In an attempt to get over this they swap homes over the holidays and by chance both happen to meet new guys Graham (Jude Law) and Miles (Jack Black) and fall in love. I must give recognition to Hans Zimmer also for the incredible music that just moves me every time I watch the movie. And this is a movie I watch at least once every Christmas. Warmly recommend.
Nykyajan suosikki jouluelokuvani ja yksi kaikkien aikojen lempielokuviani on Holiday. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) ja Iris (Kate Winslet) ovat kaksi naista kahdella eri mantereella ja molemmilla on mieshuolia. Paetakseen näitä he vaihtavat koteja joulun ajaksi ja sattumalta molemmille ilmestyy uusi mies kuvioihin, Graham (Jude Law) ja Miles (Jack Black) ja molemmat naiset rakastuvat. Pisteitä annan myös upealle Hans Zimmerille elokuvan musiikista joka liikuttaa minua joka kerta kun katson elokuvaa. Tämä elokuva minun on katsottava ainakin kerran joulunaikaan. Voin suositella erittäin lämpimästi.
3. Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York (1992)
All kids remember the classic Home Alone movies, where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) wishes for his family to disappear and ends up spending Christmas home alone defending it from the burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). I actually saw Home Alone 2 before the first one and have grown to love it even more. This is also where my love for New York started. Kevin accidentally ends up on a plane alone to New York instead of Florida with his family. He has his father's valuables and is inventive enough to check in at the Plaza Hotel in NYC without the staff realizing he is alone. He tries to survive in the big apple and find his aunt and uncle but ends up finding their empty house. When running into his two favorite crooks Harry and Marv Kevin sets up traps in the house and the fun begins. One of the most touching moments in the movie is when he is finally reunited with his mother by the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. And once again, no Christmas mood without the music. Home Alone was later followed with sequels but the leading role of Kevin was changed.
Kaikki lapset muistavat Yksin Kotona-elokuvat, jossa Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) toivoo perheensä katoavan ja päätyy viettämään joulua yksin kotona puolustaen sitä murtovarkailta Harryltä (Joe Pesci) ja Marvelta (Daniel Stern). Itse näin Yksin Kotona 2 - Eksynyt New Yorkissa-elokuvan ensin ja siitä on tullut suosikkini. Tästä elokuvasta myös rakkauteni New Yorkiin on alkanut. Kevin joutuu yksin lennolle New Yorkiin kun muu perhe matkaa Floridaan. Isänsä lompakon avulla hän saa kekseliäisyytensä ansiosta huoneen New Yorkin Plaza hotellista henkilökunnan saamatta selville että hän on yksin. Hän yrittää selvitä isossa omenassa ja löytää setänsä ja tätinsä, mutta päätyykin näiden tyhjään taloon. Törmättyään kahteen lempirosvoonsa Harryyn ja Marveen, talo muuttuu ansojen viidakoksi ja hauskuus alkaa. Elokuvan ehkä koskettavin hetki on kun Kevin vihdoin näkee äitinsä Rockefeller Centerin joulukuusen luona. Myös musiikilla on tässä elokuvassa tärkeä rooli (ainakin minulle).
4. The Santa Clause (1994)
Who is Santa Clause really? This Christmas classic is one to watch every holiday season. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is a divorcee who accidentally kills Santa Clause who falls off his roof at Christmas. As the Clause says the next person to put on Santa's jacket is the next Santa Clause. Scott and his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) are transported to North Pole where all the elves greet their new boss and show him the ropes. Scott still doesn't believe he is Santa until he starts gaining weight and growing a beard that is beyond his control. His son earlier in disbelief of Santa now believes more than ever but how to convince the rest of the world about being a man who is said to be only fairy tale? Santa Clause also has two sequels, I've seen both of them but there's just something about the original story.
Kuka joulupukki oikeastaan on? Muttu Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille on jokajoulun kestosuosikki. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) on eronnut ja vahingossa pelästyttää joulupukin tämän häärätessä hänen katollaan ja pukki tippuu ja kuolee. Laittaessaan pukin kaavun ylleen Scottista tulee automaattisesti uusi pukki. Scott ja hänen poikansa Charlie (Eric Lloyd) päätyvät Pohjoisnavalle, jossa iloinen tonttujoukko tervehtii uutta pomoaan ja kertoo uuden pukin työnkuvasta. Scott ei vieläkään usko olevansa joulupukki kunnes painoa alkaa kertymään ja parta kasvamaan eikä hän mitenkään tätä pysty hallitsemaan. Hänen poikansa joka aiemmin ei uskonut pukkiin onkin nyt eniten uskossa, mutta miten Scott saa uskoteltua muulle maailmalle olevansa hahmo jonka kuuluisi olla satua? Elokuvalla on myös kaksi jatko-osaa, molemmat on tullut katsottua mutta alkuperäinen tarina on silti paras. Mutta Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille ja Mutta Mitä Tapahtui Joulupukille 2 Nelosella 22.12. klo 16.30 ja 23.12. klo 16.25.
5. Love Actually (2003)
Love is all around us, and it's Christmas. Love Actually is all about one thing; love at Christmas. Set in London, UK this is a must see romantic Christmas comedy. The story follows eight very different couples and their love lives around Christmas, starring Keira Knightly, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant just to mention a few.
On joulu ja rakkautta on joka paikassa. Rakkautta Vain kertoo nimensä mukaisesti rakkaudesta, erityisesti joulunaikaan. Tarina sijoittuu Lontooseen ja on yksi rakastetuimmista nykyajan romanttisista komedioista. Mukana on kahdeksan paria ja heidän rakkauselämänsä joulua edeltävänä aikana, pääosissa mm. Keira Knightley, Colin Firth ja Hugh Grant.
6. The Family Stone (2005)
We all have crazy families don't we? There is just something about combining these families and Christmas into a movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is playing an uptight businesswoman Meredith who is about to meet her boyfriend's not so conservative family for the first time, at Christmas. She has no idea what she's in for and before the holidays are over she feels like a fish out of water who wants to jump into another pool. Diane Keaton plays the wacky mother and in other family member roles starring for example Luke Wilson and Rachel McAdams. Will Meredith loosen up and enjoy Christmas with her new family?
Kaikillahan on hieman hullu perhe vai mitä? Tämän ja joulun yhdistämisestä saa jostain syystä mitä parhaimpia elokuvia aikaiseksi. Perheen Jalokivi on hauska joulukomedia jossa Sarah Jessica Parkerin esittämä tiukkis businessnainen Meredith tapaa miesystävänsä vähemmän perinteisen perheen ensimmäistä kertaa jouluna. Hän ei tiedä yhtään mihin on joutunut eikä tunne itseään alkuunkaan kotoisaksi ja toivoo pääsevänsä pois ennen kuin joulu on ohi. Perheen hulvattoman hauskaa äitiä esittää Diane Keaton ja perheen muina jäseninä nähdään mm. Luke Wilson ja Rachel McAdams. Pystyykö Meredith rentoutumaan ja nauttimaan joulusta uuden perheensä parissa?
7. Little Women (1994)
The classic story by Louisa M. Alcott back in the 1800s tells a story about four sisters Meg, (Trini Alvarado) Jo, (Winona Ryder) Beth, (Claire Danes) Amy(Kirsten Dunst/Samantha Mathis) and their mother (Susan Sarandon) struggling in the post-Civil War America. Their father is fighting at the war so the girls spend a lot of time without him. Despite all misfortune and the different suitors the girls face nothing is more important as sisterhood. I remember my grandmother got me this particular version of the movie for Christmas years ago and I fell in love with the story. There is laughter, sadness, romance and definitely holiday spirit. Remember to read the book also.

Alcottin 1800-luvun klassinen tarina Pikku Naisia kertoo neljästä siskosta Megistä, (Trini Alvarado) Josta, (Winona Ryder) Bethistä, (Claire Danes) Amystä (Kirsten Dunst/Samantha Mathis) ja heidän äidistään (Susan Sarandon) jotka taistelevat selvitääkseen sisällissodan jälkeisessä Amerikassa. Tyttöjen isä on sotimassa joten tytöt viettävät pääosin aikansa äitinsä kanssa. Vastoinkäymisistä ja lukuisista kosijoista huolimatta mikään ei ole yhtä tärkeää kuin sisarrakkaus. Sain tämän elokuvaversion aikanaan joululahjaksi isoäidiltäni ja ihastuin tarinaan oitis. Se on täynnä iloa, surua, romantiikkaa ja tietenkin joulumieltä. Muistakaa myös kirja.
8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
A classic Christmas story about an old man called Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) who claims to be Santa Clause. He works at Macy's as the department store santa and is soon institutionalized as a crazy person. The woman who hired him, Doris Walker(Maureen O'Hara) and her daughter Susan (Natalie Wood) soon start to notice that there is something very special about this man. Fred Gailey (John Payne) a lawyer and friend of Doris decides to help Kris at a trial and proving to everyone that he is in fact the one and only Santa Claus.
Klassinen joulutarina vanhasta miehestä nimeltä Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) joka väittää olevansa Joulupukki. Hän työskentelee Macy's tavaratalossa pukkina ja julistetaan puheidensa vuoksi hulluksi. Hänet palkannut nainen Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) ja tämän tytär Susan (Natalie Wood) huomaavat pian että tässä miehessä on jotakin todella erikoista. Heidän ystävänsä ja juristi Fred Gaileyn (John Payne) avulla he auttavat Krisiä todistamaan kaikille että tämä todella on oikea Joulupukki.

9. The Flight Before Christmas (2008)
This animated partly Finnish success story tells about a reindeer called Niko who has to overcome his fear of flying so he can save his fleet from a pack of wolves. He hears from his mother that his father is a part of Santa Clause's flying forces and he also dreams about flying there someday. With the help of a flying squirrel Julius Niko desperately tries to find his way to Santa's fell to see his father. The movie sequel Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure was released in 2012
Niko Lentäjän Poika on suomalainen menestystarina joka kertoo pikkuporosta nimeltä Niko, jonka on voitettava lentopelkonsa pelastaakseen porolaumansa uhkaavalta susilaumalta. Kuullessaan äidiltään Oonalta että hänen isänsä kuuluu joulupukin lentäviin poroihin, ja Nikokin haluaa jonakin päivänä kuulua tähän joukkoon. Liito-orava ystävänsä Juliuksen avulla Niko lähtee etsimään joulupukin maata tavatakseen isänsä. Elokuvan jatko-osa Niko 2 - Lentäjäveljekset ilmestyi vuonna 2012.
10. Elf (2003)
This Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell as the elf Buddy became a box office hit. Buddy has been raised as an elf but realizes something isn't right since he is way bigger than the others. He discovers he really is human and is sent to New York to find out about his true origins. It turns out his real father never knew he was born and just happens to be on Santa's naughty list. Meanwhile Buddy is enjoying New York to the fullest.
Will Ferrellin Buddy tonttuna tähdittämä joulukomedia oli hitti jo syntyessään. Tontut ovat kasvattaneet Buddyn, joka pian huomaa olevansa erilainen kuin muut. Hän saa selville että onkin ihminen ja hänet lähetetään New Yorkiin etsimään isäänsä. Käy ilmi että tämä ei koskaan tiennyt Buddyn syntymästä ja on vielä kaiken lisäksi joulupukin tuhmien listalla. Samaan aikaan Buddy nauttii New Yorkin iloista.
