Falling for Sparks

I can't remember the last time I read a book that wasn't school literature. It was probably almost a year ago in Nice and I was so captured by those books that I started and ended a lot of my days with those. Now I've grown interest in Nicholas Sparks books. A staggering 8 of his books have been transformed into movies. The Notebook is absolutely a legend, and a recent favorite of mine Safe Haven. That's the newest movie. I bought some of the books for Christmas and as soon as the school stress gets easier I'll get on with these. One book I wanted wasn't there so I'm still waiting for that. And there are two books adapted to movies coming out soon. Any experiences about Sparks? Have a nice weekend!

En muista koska viimeksi olen lukenut muuta kuin koulukirjallisuutta. Taisi olla lähes vuosi sitten Nizzassa, ja ne kirjat todella veivät mennessään että usein aloitin ja lopetin päivän niitä lukemalla. Nyt olen ihastunut Nicholas Sparksin kirjoihin. Huikeat 8 hänen kirjoistaan on muutettu elokuviksi. The Notebook on ehdottomasti legenda, ja uusin suosikkini Safe Haven. Se on uusin elokuva. Ostin joitakin kirjoista jouluksi, ja heti kun koulu stressi hieman helpottaa aloitan tämän urakan. Yhtä kirjaa vielä odottelen kun sitä ei Akateemisen hyllystä löytynyt. Parista kirjasta on myös tulossa lähiaikoina elokuva. Onko teillä mitään lukukokemuksia Sparksista? Hyvää viikonloppua! 

A night well slept

I slept better than I have in a long time last night. In honor of the new year we bought some new pillows and blankets by Joutsen, pure Finnish design. I tried out my new pillow last night and it really made a difference to my previous (Joutsen=Swan) pillow. There's no place like your own bed.

Nukuin paremmin kuin pitkään aikaan viime yönä. Uuden vuoden kunniaksi ostimme Joutsenen tyynyjä ja peittoja, puhdasta ja luotettavaa suomalaista designia. Kokeilin omaa tyynyäni viime yönä ja eron todella huomasi edelliseen Joutseneeni. Mikään ei kyllä voita omaa sänkyä.

Junior championship night

Yesterday, Sunday was the most exciting one I've had for a while. I've been so taken with work and school assignments that I hadn't been watching the Junior Hockey World Championships, that took place right next door in our neighbor country Sweden, in the city of Malmö. When my Canadian friend reminded me about this the tournament just got exciting. Finland was playing Canada on Saturday and crushed them with a final score of 5-1, sending the Canadians to the bronze medal game against Russia, and eventually ending up in 4th place. Not so good for a country that relies on the Junior Championships and the Olympic Games.

Anyways thanks to the Canadians we made it to the juicy final against our hockey arch enemy Sweden. It wasn't the first time we've played them on their home turf. That gave the Swedes confidence and the newspapers were already announcing the schedule etc for the upcoming gold medal party. The game couldn't have started better when Finland (Lindell) scored the first goal before 30 seconds of the first period had passed.  After that you could hear the Sverige! (Sweden!) chant in the arena shut down. The second period was the really dramatic and goal scoring was at its best. Sweden (Wallmark) tied it but only 45 seconds later Finland (Mäenalanen) took Finland to a 2-1 lead. They didn't let Sweden control the game much. In the 3rd period the game really turned into the game of the referees. Sweden was losing the championship and the referees (Canadian) started to give meaningless penalties for Finland and gave Sweden the chance to power play. That ended up in Sweden (Djoos) getting the game tied once again and Over Time was going to be played. It was torture watching the OT. When Ristolainen hit the puck in the goal I couldn't believe it. We'd actually won the gold medal and the junior world championship! Unbelievable! No one had this kind of expectations for the team and they did it. If you become a professional athlete you gotta learn to win or lose. It's been shocking to see the Swedish newspapers saying they're offering crisis help to the Swedish players for losing. Where else than Scandinavia could this happen? 

Fresh new potatoes for dinner

Eilinen, sunnuntai oli jännittävämpi kuin pitkään aikaan. Olen ollut niin kiireinen töiden ja koulun takia että en ollut ehtinyt seuraamaan Junioreiden Lätkän MM-kisoja, jotka pidettiin naapurimaassamme Ruotsissa, Malmön kaupungissa. Kun kanadalainen ystäväni muistutti minua turnauksesta asiat alkoivat muuttua jänniksi. Suomi pelasi Kanadaa vastaan lauantaina ja murskasi heidät luvuin 5-1, ja lähetti kanadalaiset pronssiotteluun Venäjää vastaan, josta he lopulta tippuivat 4. sijalle. Ei erityisen hyvin maalta joka luottaa junnujen MM-kisoihin ja olympialaisiin. 

Oli miten oli kiitos kanadalaisten niin pääsimme mehukkaaseen finaaliin arkkivihollistamme Ruotsia vastaan. Se ei ollut ensimmäinen kerta kun pelasimme heitä vastaan heidän kotikentällään. Se antoi ruotsalaisille itsevarmuutta ja lehdet olivatkin jo tiedottaneet kultajuhlien aikatauluista ja sen sellaisesta. Peli ei olisi voinut paremmin alkaa kun Suomen Lindell iski kiekon häkkiin alle puoli minuuttia peliajan alettua. Sen jälkeen Sverige! huudot areenalla hiljenivät. Toinen erä oli todella dramaattinen ja maalintekoja täynnä. Ruotsin Wallmark tasoitti 1-1 mutta vain 45 sekuntia myöhemmin Suomen Mäenalanen vei Suomen taas johtoon, luvuin 2-1. Leijonat eivät antaneet Ruotsin kontrolloida peliä. Kolmannessa erässä peli muuttui tuomaripeliksi. Ruotsi oli häviämässä mestaruuden ja tuomarit (Kanada) antoivat Suomelle naurettavia jäähyjä ja Ruotsille mahdollisuuden ylivoimapeliin. Tämä päättyi siihen että Ruotsin Djoos tasoitti Ruotsin taas 2-2 ja jatkoajalle oltiin menossa. Se oli yhtä kidutusta. Kun Ristolainen kiskaisi kiekon reppuun en voinut uskoa sitä. Olimme todellakin voittaneet kultaa ja junioreiden maailmanmestaruuden! Uskomatonta! Kenelläkään ei ollut tälle joukkueelle tällaisia odotuksia ja he tekivät sen. Jos alkaa ammatti urheilijaksi pitää oppia voittamaan ja häviämään. On häikäisevää nähdä ruotsalaislehdissä tarjottavan kriisiapua pelaajille häviön takia. Missä muualla kuin Skandinaviassa tällaista voi tapahtua?

Saturday Playlist

A new year has started

Well, it's a new year. How has yours started? I've been taking it easy but been quite busy with working and more school deadlines and such. Today I also read some news that winter might be called off cause the weather hasn't been like that at all. Can you imagine? Canceling winter in Finland. In the northern parts, Lapland that is there's plenty of snow and minus degrees though, but here in the south it's like a long fall. I don't mind the "warmth" but some snow would be nice though. Then again what snow usually causes is huge parking problems in the cities and when it melts it gets all brown and wet, that's gross and not good for the shoes either. Hehe. Lapland isn't that far away, only an hour by plane so it's easy to get some winter for a while if you wanna get some. And apparently it's a big hit now since a lot of British and French tourists are visiting up there. Even some royals.

Yesterday my brothers and I were watching some old home movies from 15 years back. Gosh how the time really has flown by. Some was from our trips around that we used to do, especially at summer time. I remember back then I had an obsession with a teen show called Sweet Valley High. Anyone else? I was obsessed with reading the books too, I think I have all of them. Watching my mum's home videos made me realize how movies and television has been a big passion of mine since a kid, even more than music. I was remembering the lines back then already and it hasn't changed until this day. I still remember so many lines and scenes from movies especially and watching them with my family in particular gets them annoyed since I usually spit out the lines before the actors say them. So I dunno, maybe I am in the wrong field and should switch to the film industry, it has always intrigued me. What do you guys think? You have something you're really passionate about? Btw, the phase also included me copying the twins hair and the style of clothes they wore. Those were the days. And it's fun remembering them. 

Uusi vuosi on täällä. Miten teidän on alkanut? Itse olen ottanut iisisti, tehnyt töitä, hionut koulutehtäviä ja sen sellaista. Tänään luin myös uutisista että talvi saatetaan peruutta. Voitteko kuvitella? Talven peruutus Suomessa. Lapissa tosin on reilusti lunta ja pakkasta, mutta etelässä on aivan kuin venähtänyt syksy. Minua ei kyllä "lämpö" haittaa, mutta olisi kiva jos olisi vähän lunta. Toisaalta lumi aiheuttaa niin paljon harmia varsinkin isoissa kaupungeissa. Parkkipaikkoja uupuu, ja kun lumi sulaa niin se on likaista ja ruskeaa loskaa. Ei mukavaa kengillekään. Hehe. Lappihan on vain noin tunnin lentomatkan päässä, joten talvea kaipaaville on myös mahdollista lähteä siellä käymään. Ja näköjään siitä on tulossa trendikästä kun siellä ravaa paljon ranskalaisia ja englantilaisia turisteja. Jopa kuninkaallisia.

Eilen katsoimme veljieni kanssa kotivideoita 15 vuoden takaa. Miten aika onkaan lentänyt. Osa materiaalista oli reissuiltamme joita teimme varsinkin kesäaikaan. Muistan että niinä aikoina minulla oli pakkomielle Sweet Valley High teinisarjaan. Muistaako kukaan? Olin hulluna niihin kirjoihin myös ja minulla taitaa olla ne kaikki. Kun katselin näitä vanhoja kotivideoita tajusin miten elokuvat ja tv on ollut intohimoni jo nuoresta lähtien, jopa enemmän kuin musiikki. Muistin repliikkejä ulkoa jo silloin, eikä se todellakaan ole muuttunut. Muistan edelleen liian monta repliikkiä ja kohtausta elokuvista ja jos katson jotain varsinkin perheeni kanssa saattaa se ärsyttää heitä. Sanat tulevat suustani yleensä ennen näyttelijöitä. Joten en tiedä, ehkä olen väärällä alalla ja pitäisi siirtyä elokuva-alalle, se on aina kiehtonut minua. Mitä mieltä olette? Onko teillä jotain mikä on intohimonne? Muuten, SVH vaihe sisälsi myös kaksosten hius-ja vaatetyylin matkimista. Ne olivat aikoja. Ja niitä on hauska muistella. 

My 2013 Part 1/4

Last year was just incredible for me and I'd like to look back on some of the best moments of last year.

Viime vuosi oli minulle aivan huippu, joten haluaisin palata ajassa takaisin ja hieman muistella sitä.

January

The new year started by me flying to France with a friend of mine from school and beginning my life in a strange country. It was time for my university exchange and I had been looking forward to it for really  long. The winter had started out really cold in Finland so it was just great to get to Nice where the sun was shining slightly more than back home and where minus degrees were not a problem. Our big suitcases were filled and we took a cab from the airport to my apartment. As we wanted to get to know our surroundings we headed out for a walk. I lived just one street away from the beach promenade and the center was only a 5-minute walk away so the location was perfect. 

School started and during the first day we got to know so many new people from all around the world. I'm a really sociable person so I enjoyed this a lot. I instantly made new friends, even some from my home country. It took some time to get used to the school system as it was a bit different from ours. Instead of having two different "periods" in the spring semester we just had one and all the courses during the entire spring. This meant that there were weeks that could be totally free and longer holidays were possible also. When we arrived the Christmas market was still on at the main square and we took a ride in the ferris wheel there too. In January I also visited Cannes for the first time during my stay with the two other Finnish girls. There was some shopping involved too and we saw the NRJ Music Awards at the Festival building too. And the sales started in January and here you could actually make great findings, and probably because of this I got the "reputation" of a shopaholic among my new friends. Well you only live once and why not enjoy once you are living on the French Riviera. I also did my first trip to Italy, Pisa and Florence in January, we had a really fun road trip. 

Tammikuu

Uusi vuosi alkoi sillä että lensin koulukaverini kanssa Ranskaan aloittamaan uutta elämää ja koulua. Oli opiskelijavaihdon aika jota olin odottanut todella kauan. Suomessa talvi oli alkanut todella kylmänä joten oli aivan mahtavaa päästä Nizzaan missä aurinko paistoi hieman enemmän kuin kotona ja missä pakkasasteet eivät häirinneet. Suuret matkalaukkumme olivat täynnä ja hyppäsimme kentältä taksiin ja ajoimme asunnolleni. Halusimme tutustua ympäristöön joten lähdimme pienelle kävelylle. Asuin vain yhden kadun päässä rantakadulta, ja keskusta oli vain 5 minuutin kävelymatkan päässä, täydellinen sijainti siis. 

Koulu alkoi ja ensimmäisenä päivänä tutustuimme moniin uusiin ihmisiin maailman eri kolkista. Olen todella sosiaalinen ihminen joten nautin tästä todella. Sain heti uusia ystäviä, jopa muutaman kotimaastani. Vei oman aikansa totutella koulun systeemiin sillä se poikkesi hieman meidän järjestelmästämme. Sen sijaan että kevätlukukausi olisi jaettu kahteen jaksoon oli meillä vain yksi jakso ja samat kurssit koko kevään. Tämä tarkoitti sitä että saattoi olla kokonaisia viikkoja siellä täällä vapaana, ja pidempiä lomia. Kun saavuimme Nizzaan joulumarkkinat olivat vielä auki pääaukiolla. Siellä oli myös maailmanpyörä jossa kävimme pyörähtämässä. Jo tammikuussa vierailin myös Cannesissa ensimmäisen kerran vaihtoni aikana suomityttöjen kanssa. Kävimme shoppailemassa ja siellä oli samaan aikaan myös NRJ Music Awards-tapahtuma. Tammikuussa alkoi myös ale ja sieltä saattoi tehdä todella hyviä löytöjä. Ehkä siksi sain hieman shoppailuholistin "maineen" uusien ystävieni joukossa. No kerran sitä vain eletään ja miksi sitä ei nauttisi kun kerran Ranskan Rivieralla elää. Kävimme tammikuussa myös ensimmäistä kertaa Italiassa, Pisassa ja Firenzessä. Meillä oli hauska autoreissu. 

February

In February school was becoming a more familiar place and you knew where the different classrooms are and how you'd read the schedule. February was also the time for big events on the French Riviera, such as The Nice Carnival and the Citrus Festival in Menton. I was so excited cause I also had some friends over in February and I loved showing them around in my new home, a trip to Monaco was also a must. Since I knew I was gonna do some more shopping and the distance to my home was so short I flew back home on our winter break for a few days together with my friends when they were leaving. It was so nice to see my family and I had missed our dog so much too. The days went by fast and before I knew it I was back in Nice. Traveling was becoming normal too, for example another trip to Italy (Genoa and Turin) and Geneva, Switzerland where I hung out with my sister and cousin who were there on a holiday. We also celebrated a Finnish holiday by baking the traditional buns for that. 

Helmikuu

Helmikuussa koulu oli jo tullut tutuksi ja oli helppo löytää luokkiin ja lukea lukujärjestystä. Helmikuussa Rivieralla oli suuria tapahtumia kuten Nizzan karnevaali ja Mentonin citrusfestivaalit. Olin erityisen innoissani sillä pari ystävääni olivat tulossa vierailulle ja oli ihanaa näyttää heille uutta kotiani. Reissu Monacoon oli myös pakollinen. Tiesin että tulen shoppailemaan lisää ja että koti on lähellä joten lähdin muutamaksi päiväksi kotona käymään talvilomallamme. Lensin samalla lennolla kuin ystäväni. Oli ihanaa nähdä perhettä ja koiraa oli ollut myös todella ikävä. Päivät kuluivat nopeasti eikä aikaakaan kun olin taas Nizzassa. Matkustelemisesta tuli myös enemmän arkea, esimerkiksi reissu Italiaan (Genova ja Torino) sekä Sveitsin Geneveen, jossa hengailin siskoni ja serkkuni kanssa, jotka olivat siellä lomalla. Pitihän sitä laskiaista myös juhlia tyttöjen kanssa. 

March

I was told that 2013 was the coldest spring there had been for a while, but in March we started to get some more warmth. It was also Easter and I traveled to Switzerland to visit my Swiss family I lived with for a summer when I was younger. I hadn't seen them in years and the days I spent there were some of the best ever. As it was getting warmer it was also possible to run in less clothes too, which in March in Finland would still be impossible because of the snow. I also continued going to the gym and even if the classes were in French they were easy to understand as Les Mills is the same everywhere. I really kept going from week to week. 

Maaliskuu

Minulle sanottiin että 2013 oli kylmin kevät pitkään aikaan, mutta maaliskuussa alkoi sitä lämpöäkin näkymään. Oli myös pääsiäisen aika ja matkustin Sveitsiin tapaamaan sveitsiläisperhettäni. Asuin heidän luonaan yhden kesän kun olin nuorempi. En ollut nähnyt heitä vuosiin joten viettämäni päivät siellä olivat aivan ihania. Kun alkoi tulemaan lämpimämpää oli myös mahdollista vähentää juoksuvaatteita, joka ei Suomessa olisi mahdollista maaliskuussa lumen takia. Jatkoin myös salilla käyntiä ja vaikka tunnit olivat ranskaksi oli niitä helppo ymmärtää sillä Les Mills on sama kaikkialla. Jaksoin hyvin pusertaa viikosta toiseen. 

Boxing Day in Helsinki

After spending Christmas with my family I also wanted to show my friend around Helsinki. So what do you do on a day when all shops are closed? Walk around as tourists do. We stopped by at some churches, just walking and no stress. The market square was empty, as it was only Boxing Day. I wanted to show something very traditional so we walked around until Café Strindberg opened and had some lunch and coffee there. I always like the atmosphere there, the seats are comfy and you almost feel like you're in a Parisian café. We then took the ferry to Suomenlinna fortress island and before we got back it was dark. It was getting a bit chilly so it was better to catch the tram back to my place and on the way we stopped by to get tickets to our movie for the night, The Hunger Games - Catching Fire. We had a bit time to relax and get ready before heading out to dinner and the movie, and after we were both so tired that we didn't go out for drinks as we had planned. The next day was already time to say goodbye. The time went by so fast and I really hope to see each other again soon! :)

Vietettyämme joulun perheeni kanssa oli aika näyttää Helsinkiä ystävälleni. Mitä sitä voi tehdä kun kaikki kaupat ovat kiinni? Kävellä kaupungilla turistien tapaan. Pysähdyimme matkalla kirkoilla, ja kävelimme ympäriinsä ilman huolen häivää. Kauppatori oli tyhjillään, olihan vasta Tapaninpäivä. Halusin näyttää jotain perinteistä joten odotimme kunnes Cafè Strindberg avas ovensa ja nautimme siellä lounasta ja kahvia. Pidän kahvilan tunnelmasta, istuimet ovat mukavat ja se on aivan kuin olisi pariisilaisessa kahvilassa. Lounaan jälkeen hyppäsimme Suomenlinnan lautalle ja ennen kuin ehdimme takaisin oli jo pimeää. Ilma alkoi viilenemään joten hyppäsimme raitiovaunuun ja matkalla kotiin kävimme ostamassa liput illan leffaan, Nälkäpeli - Vihan Liekit. Meillä oli hieman aikaa rentoutua ennen kuin laittauduimme ja lähdimme ulos syömään ja leffaan. Olimme leffan jälkeen molemmat niin väsyneitä että emme enää jatkaneet iltaa drinkkien merkeissä kuten alunperin suunnittelimme. Seuraavana päivänä oli jo jäähyväisten aika. Aika kului niin nopeasti ja todella toivon että näemme taas pian! :)

At Café Strindberg there were people lining up to get in before the official opening time. I could feel the warmth filling me once we stepped in. The waiters instantly circled around offering people some glasses of water to drink before ordering. Once we had made our order something weird happened. I was still checking the menu and all of a sudden my glass fell down first spilling the water on my jacket on the couch and then falling down on the floor and breaking to pieces. I swear I didn't even touch it. The waiter and I had a laugh since he was sure it was the elves who did it. Well, maybe those pieces will bring me good luck for this year.

Café Strindbergillä oli jo jonoksi ihmisiä ennen varsiaista avaamisaikaa. Tunsin kuinka lämpö täytti minut kun astuimme sisään, ulkona seisoskelu kuitenkin verottaa. Tarjoilijat jakoivat välittömästi asiakkaille vesilaseja ennen kuin kukaan ehti tilata. Kun olimme antaneet tilauksemme jotain outoa tapahtui. Tarkastelin vielä ruokalistaa kun yhtäkkiä vesilasini tippui ensin kastellen sohvalla olleen takkini ja tippui sitten maahan pirstoutuen miljoonaksi palaksi. En edes hipaissut koko lasia. Naureskelimme asiaa tarjoilijan kanssa ja hän oli vakuuttunut että tontut olivat asialla. No, ehkäpä ne sirpaleet tuovat onnea tulevalle vuodelle.
